How to wash makeup brushes

I shared my entire makeup brush collection in a previous post, but this got me thinking about brush care. We’ve created an easy and cheap makeup brush tutorial to teach you everything you need to know to become a superstar. Make-up brushes generate bacteria and stay on the face, which can cause problems. In addition, proper cleaning extends the life of the brushes and keeps them working. By the end of this makeup brush tutorial, you’ll know how to properly care for your brushes, what products you need, and you’ll realize that the process doesn’t have to be expensive or stressful.

What do you need?

  • Soap cleaning brush
  • Dirty brushes, sponges and makeup tools
  • Rinse with water
  • Cleaning palette
  • paper or cloth towels
  • Stand for dryer

In the main part of this article, I will talk about how to narrow down the list even more and still get a good toothbrush.

Cleaning brushes

Before I get into the steps of washing makeup brushes, I want to talk about some accessories that make washing faster and more efficient. I prefer to use a silicone exfoliator like the Real Techniques Palette, but they are very expensive. Cleaning kits are more common at thrift stores like TJMaxx and Ross, and most cost around $5. Walmart even sells a small unit in the health and beauty section for about $3. They come in all shapes and sizes. A little suction at the bottom of the sink to let the water through. Some slip through your fingers like magic. The Real Techniques palette has a strap that slips over my wrist. Ideally, you’ll want to find a device that fits your needs, but it’s not necessary. Before purchasing this palette, I switched the spray brush in my palm. On the other hand, I find that the paddle gives a deeper clean and all the soap washes off faster. I highly recommend buying one.

Bath soap

The best toothbrush soaps are two-fold. The soap should be able to clean the brush and ensure that the bristles are soft, just like the conditioner makes the brush. During the shopping season, the soap options are endless. I use e.l.f. and the Real Techniques version which works well. This is my go-to soap for all-purpose cleaning, but it cleaned my brushes, sponges, and tools effectively on the first try. This soap makes my brushes as soft as the day I bought them. I got these little bottles at the Dollar Tree. When I bought my first full size bottle it took me a long time to use it. I say find a simple solution that actually works!

Step 1: Wet the brush

The first step in washing your makeup brushes is very obvious, but you need to wet your brushes! From this point it should go down until the brush thickens. This is because you don’t want water seeping into the glue in the brush tube that holds the brushes in place. This will damage the brush.

Remember that water temperature is very important. We recommend using warm water. Cold water doesn’t clean well, and hot water can damage the brushes and the glue that holds them together. Use your finger and best judgment to reach a safe water temperature.

Step 2: Apply soap to the palette

The Pallet Reel technology is divided into three sections for small, medium and large brushes. If the palette is like this, apply an inch of soap to the affected area.

Step 3: Add water to the palette.

On the third wash with your makeup brush, add a drop of water to the soap to clean. When I say spark, I mean very little! If you run the soap too much, it will not work properly.

Step 4: Rotate the brush on the palette

This is the fun part! Move the brush in a circular motion on the palette and try to give the hair a good coat. The brush should be shiny and cleaner.
