Take your makeup brushes every day, but after each use, toxins like sweat, oil and bacteria and makeup residue get stuck in the bristles and cause skin blemishes like acne.
According to experts, brushes such as bronzer, makeup and concealer used for face makeup should be cleaned at least once a week.
And how do you clean make-up brushes? It’s not as complicated as you think. You don’t need fancy detergents or soaps, you can clean your brushes with common items you probably have around the house!
DIY ways to clean your makeup brushes
If you wash your brushes at least once a week, you will soon have bacteria-free brushes. But how do you clean your makeup brushes without breaking your fancy makeup brush cleaners? We have five DIY makeup brush cleaners that will leave your brushes softer, cleaner, and longer.
Vinegar + Lemon
As a natural cleanser, mixing vinegar and lemon is a perfect combination for cleaning makeup brushes. Mix two tablespoons of white vinegar in a glass of warm water, dip the brush, twist it and rinse in warm water. Fight the smell of vinegar by gently rubbing your brushes against the lemon, giving it a lemon scent.
Dish Soap
It relies heavily on kitchen detergent to remove dirt from utensils, so it’s okay to use it as a makeup brush. Dampen the brush under lukewarm water, add some dish soap and scrub the product with a clean sponge: you will immediately see the make-up residue.
Baby Shampoo
The shampoo your parents used when they were little is gentle enough not only for your baby but also for your makeup brushes. Just wet the brush with warm water, add some baby shampoo and scrub it into the sink in circular motions to remove makeup. Rinse and repeat until the “green” brush is clean.
Olive Oil
Olive oil works best with a small makeup brush, because it acts not only as a natural makeup remover but also as a conditioner. Dip the brush into a small bowl of olive oil (note: it’s okay if the brush drum doesn’t come out, so it’s okay if it goes in) and brush it on the sponge as you walk, or scrub the bristles with your own fingers. You can clean brushes even deeper by mixing olive oil and shampoo to create your own cleaning business.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar can be used for anything from salad dressings to face washes. Therefore, it is not surprising that this household item can also be used to clean makeup brushes. Mix a teaspoon of vinegar with a glass of warm water and clean with vinegar + lemon according to our instructions. You can also use lemon to preserve the aroma of apple cider vinegar.
Baking Soda
This one-ingredient miracle uses the power of caustic dissolution to break up the dirt and nasty oils from your brush. Baking soda – commonly known as baking soda – has a pH of 8.3. Alkalinity is an antidote to bacteria that thrive in neutral or acidic conditions, which is why this common ingredient in cooking is so widely used as a deep cleanser
Add a teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of room temperature water and dip the brush in this mixture for 20 minutes (don’t worry, baking soda is not abrasive). Rinse and repeat with baking soda as needed until the water is clear.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is suitable for most skin types and leaves a fresh earthy scent.
To make a cosmetic brush cleaner with tea tree oil, dilute 5 drops of essential oil (pure) in a glass of warm water. Add another 5 drops of coconut oil to keep hair soft, massage, rinse and repeat as needed.
